My obsession with Ouija really started when the news came out that Parker Brothers stopped making the old boards, and went to the glow in the dark version. There was a good year or so when you couldn't find them in any store. The talk was they were going to stop making them all together. When they came back it turns out they should of stopped making them, they are of little quality. Even now it's hard to find them in the larger retail stores. It's not that great a loss with their even smaller boards and cheap planchette's.
Of couse we always had one growing up, and they were the center stage at most slumber parties. When a friend of mine showed me just how many different talking boards there were, I wanted them all.
Talking board date back long ago, but when the Fuld family took over in the late 1800's they became a house hold item by the early 1900's. My first old one is the one pictured above that I framed. It took me hours, and just as I finished the glass cracked. Well guess what? I haven't replaced it yet. I just tell people every time I replace it cracks. (I'm a bad liar and no one believes me)
Even the story of William Fuld is interesting. The talk was Fuld got ownership of the company in a hostile takeover. Mr. Fuld liked to brag he invented the Ouija, when of course that is not true; he was just smart enough to slap a patent on it. They had been making talking boards for years, and been in use much longer, the origins dating back centuries in China. Be that as it may Mr. Fuld was smart enough to see the craze of mysticism and knew how to market it. Mr. Fuld also told the tale of the board giving him advice in business dealings. Even his death turned out to be a mystery, and even a bit scandalous.
The second one is a 1940's Hasko talking board. Both sides are the same. I have the tray too, trays is what Hasko was famous for. In my collection I also have the 1946's Parker Brothers one (Okay more then one) in the box. Along with many more. My boxed ones are put up.
The framed one I got off of eBay. The wonderful seller thought I paid too much and sent a 40's version as well. From there I have gone on to other parlor games, then to making my own. Currently I wood burn Ouija's from older sewing machine cabinets. The size is the 1946 version from which I made my stencil of the letters. The picture all the way to the right is one of mine.
Now whenever I find a Ouija board, no matter the age I pick it up. Parker Brothers Ouija's are a growing collectable. The items I picked up 10 years ago have tripled in price.

We played the mega millions for 350 mil, it was a no go. Doesn't really work for that I guess :(

Loved the Ouija boards growing up. Loved your story. While reading, I remembered our 'family' board game. It wasn't until I read the last comment, and there it was WaHoo! Do any of you remember it? Up to 4 players with 4 sets of 4 marbles and 2 dice. Never found a game board in any stores, but would find homemade ones always. Thanks for the memories.

Yes I remember as well being at parties and we all tried that Ouija board. Everybody was telling everyone to be quiet and concentrate or it won't work. That Ouija board has been at alot of parties throughout time. :-)
Those are 3 really cool ouijas. I found one when I was younger, one of the really old ones with thick wood. Cardboard ones today - feh! ;)
The last one I wood burned (dare I say...) on a vintage sewing machine cabinet. I make them and sell them.

I had to get a really old deep frame and build a small box for it, then layed the fabric, and put them in.

Back in 1972, I knew a kid(Boris) who was obsessed with the Ouija board. Every evening at 8PM, his friend Thomas would come and play with evil board. As the game progressed, little Tommy started feeling ill. His throat hurt as if a great force was choking him to death. His eyes turned from their normal sky blue to a wolf like yellow. Boris in the mean time sat with a sinister scowl on his face. Tommy he said, it is time to go where you belong. And sure enough within seconds, a gruesome, black bony hand came through the board and pulled Tommy to his final place of rest.. Tommy was never seen again. True story!
Get rid of those boards!!!!!!!!!!!.............LOL They are great.
haha Yeah everyone has a story about Ouija. My first board I got when I was around 10, no horror stories here. I also make them, original art and like the one in the last picture. I also have a collection of old Tarot cards, and other mass produced future telling parlor games. No ghosts, demons have shown up yet :)
My friend is a proud owner of 2 Ouija Boards one of wich is a 1966 parker brothers from salem matt. It is made of more quality materials than the newer ones and has round edges. The other is the one thats rectangular in shape and a 1991 model before the glow in the dark ones came into being. Could you tell me the price range they would go for to a collector that would enjoy them ?
I haven't checked them in awhile because I have a stack of the newer ones. (60's-90's) The best way to know is to check completed listings on eBay.

Do you woodburn your boards freehand or do you use a template? It looks like you do very good work. I assume you polyurethane the surface to make it smooth and slick?
I free hand the corners, and the detail in the lettering. What I had to do is make my own stencil of the lettering so that the type set was correct to Ouija
Oh and I do not put polyurethane on the surface, the reason being is because these are functional Ouija's, I finely sand the surface before I wood burn. One person that I made one for had glass cut to put on top.
My sister and I had one of these when we were young. We took it over to our cousin's house as we were doing a sleepover. We waited until after dark and started playing with it. We were told that I was going to die in a car accident when I was 15 years old (I was 13 at the time) and it scared the crap out of my sister. But I and my cousin laughed about it. But, when I was 15 I was involved in a bad car accident in a custom painted GTO. My sister was in the car too and she got a broken nose, I got a hole in my leg from the lever that moves the back seat forward. And we stopped just a couple feet from a drop off. If we had gone over, all 4 people in the car would have died. It was really strange, the car was spinning (wet road) and it just stopped all of a sudden. We both talked about that night with the Ouija board, saying it was wrong. My sister turned 15 the next June. She was on her way home from her first year in high school with a friend my age whom we had known practically our whole lives. They were involved in a accident and my sister was killed instantly. It happened in December of 1979. I again thought about the Ouija board and what it told us, only it was not me but my sister when she was 15 years old. True story, I swear. I do not believe that these boards can really talk to us and that there are spirits in them but I have heard others that say it is so. It is just creepy to me that it said that to us, and it did happen. Sorry for the long post.
