Any idea on age? What should I do to preserve? In between the wood is a thin metal unpainted. Will need new carry straps and some cleaning. Any tips would be greatly appreciated

The picture is a little blurry to see details for age -- but it looks to be early 1900's era dome trunk or late 1890's. The tin appears to be pretty rusty so a repaint may be in order, or simply try to get the rust off with but that will be a bit tricky. A total rub down with very fine steel wool may help but it will change the look of the tin somewhat. If you plan to paint it then certainly use steel wool to get the heavy rust off. There are a few sites out there that will help in trunk restoration. Good luck with the project!
