Books are like our children...you can't have a favorite, you have to love them all!

I had actually gone to see some Elvis records which the owner of a closing shop couldn't locate. While she hunted for them I was looking at this book by Horace Greeley. "Oh," she said, "you can just have that." SCORE!

A three volume set, Prescott's Ferdinand and Isabella in average to poor condition. However, inside each volume is the hand written inscription, Arthur MacArthur Jr, 13th Infantry, Fort Wingate, New Mexico, February 16, 1881.

If I had to live with just one book it would most likely be "A Treasury of the Familiar" It contains all of those familiar poems, stories, and sayings we grew up with. From Pericles' Funeral Oration to Oliver Wendell Holmes' My Last Walk with the School Mistress to Lincoln's Letter to Mrs. Bixby.

The beauty of this 1760 History of England is the wonderful map "A New Map of North America from the Latest Discoveries, 1761"

Did you know that Lt. Gen. Arthur MacArthur was the father of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur. They are one of only two father-son Medal Of Honor recipients. the other is Theodore Roosevelt and Theodore Roosevelt Jr.

I did not know that when I bought them in a bunch of boxes at an auction. When I found out I was floored. For me, there is no higher plateau than the Medal of Honor. Just to have them is amazing. I would have thought that there was a monetary value but I have not been able to establish that.
