    bought this today at a garage sale ...........craftsman no. 3101 spiral ratchet screwdrivermade in west germany ...very nice condition , and came with a fullbox of bits ... anybody know the date of this item ? all the ones i find are a 4100 serial number .

      When I was growing up, my father had one since as long as I remember. That would put it back at least mid-50's. They aren't real safe as they will lock back & if accidentally released, shoot forward while turning at the same time. They were made for quite a few years. Maybe the law suits caught up with them.

      i traced it before 1947, in 1947 the serial # started with 41 . heck blunder any tool i use becomes a weapon.

      A weapon is also a tool! Depends on what you use them for as to whether they are good or bad tools. I don't dial 911, I dial 9m/m.

      Wow. I wonder if this pre dates the USA 'V' series tool line up. I have an avid Craftsman collector friend i'll call sometime. I always thought these were drills, but am wrong if yours came with bits. Very interesting item.
