This is a World War 2 era Japanese army field cap. I believe this to be a Model 1938 and it is made of wool felt, dyed khaki. There is a open weave cloth on the interior. The attached leather chinstrap is leather, attached to the cap with two brass buttons. I have read that these buttons were embossed the image of the cherry blossom, but I can't see that image on these. The sweat band is also leather. A string is in place in the back of the cap to adjust it and the two stamps on the inside probably indicate manufacturer or dates maybe even the owner's name although I have never had these translated.

The yellow, now discolored, cloth star, sewn on to the front indicates this is a cap of the Imperial Japanese Army. A lot of this style cap is seen with an anchor sewn to the front which indicates Imperial Japanese Navy. Some pictures show troops wearing these caps with a cloth extending down the nape of the neck, but I don't think that these cloths were sewn to the caps.

These caps were used through out China and the south Pacific and southeast Asia, and also, by allies of the Japanese. Caps like these were also made of green-dyed cloth in varying shades of green.
