Please let me show you a silver little chatelaine purse about 1895's. It has on the ring 3hallmarks (see picture)one hallmark looks like a kind of letter x, then I believe to see 800 silver hallmark and the third is at all difficult to decipher this looks like a makers mark.
It's a little purse with a beautifully crafted bracket with crocodiles (4) on it and a fruit dish. As you can see on the photo seethis purse has 2 boxes.
The little purse is in excellent condition. And another example of the beautiful small pieces which one used to have in the past. Measurement: 2.5 x 3 ".Does someone knows something more to tell about the hallmarks marks?

After some time and help of my fellow collectors (see below) I was able to detect a mark for Germany and a mark for the city of Freiburg. Thanks this help of the viewers so how wonderful is CollectorsWeekly!!!

Hi Agram have you checked out the maker here:

I suppose all of these mesh bags were a by product of armour / chain mail. A little like the Japanese swordsmiths who became sculptors?

Hi vetrai050, how someone earlier got the idea to make this kind of mesh purses I don't know perhaps your suggestion of armour /chain mail. What I do know is that in earlier days ladies of the upper class used were wearing a silver or golden hook (often rich decorated) on a belt to their waists. Attached to this hook were one or several, often highly ornamental, plaques, from which dangled not only watches, but also various trinkets or ‘toys’, such as containers for thimbles, purses, scissors, bodkins and such like (tassels were also popular). From there the origin of the name; Chatelaine which comes from the French word chateau, what means Castle. So the lady of the castle carried to this hook all kinds of utensils. You can still find very complete very beautiful chatelaines see links:
      and another beautiful antique example:

      vetrai050, Still another question please!
To be honest, I do not have such a good look on finding antique marks. You are so nice to put a link to German marks, which of these quality marks in your opinion is the same as that of my chatelaine purse? I would again be very gratefull if you could give me the clue!
