This is an eagle carved from coal. Broke down in Corbin Kentucky and found this. Just a heads up, if you want cocktails do not break down in Corbin Kentucky. Dryyyyyyy!

Did you literally FIND this, like in the woods, or at a shop? Is it coated in anything so it doesn't melt? (I don't know ho hard coal from the ground is - LOL - I'm only used to charcoal!

the figurines these days are 'crafted' from coal rather than carved, but still a nice little eagle:
"... the “coal crafting” process is a combination of using coal, coal dust and a resin binder to hold everything together so that it can be molded and formed. Due to the resin in the mixture and the peroxide catalyst which is added to harden the object, the objects come out of the process a grey color. To give the object a natural coal appearance, they are power sprayed with a black lacquer. While it may seem odd to have to spray paint coal to get it to look like coal, the entire process starts with and has as its base…COAL. ..."

LOL - Of course you have to paint it! It's kind of like the lava sculptures from Hawaii - but I don't think they paint those. Thanks for the info!
