This is my prize find from our local Goodwill :
The vase has a matte blue-green glaze almost turquoise ( not as dark as in the pictures) over a yellowish under glaze and stands 10 1/2" tall. The top is 6"in dia. and the base is 5"in dia. with small handles at the bottom. It doesn't seem to have any damage at all. There is a drip on the very bottom that looks like it's worn away, but it doesn't show. It's quite heavy and very smooth to the touch. The inside shows dripping were the glaze runs to the bottom with some of the under glaze showing through. There is no factory mark on the bottom just something that looks like three 1's ( 111 ) stamped into the clay. I've searched for a few days and have come up with nothing. It seems to have the looks of Rookwood, Roseville, Weller, McCoy, etc.but nothing I can pin down. I've had one opinion that it might be early Pfaltzgraff art pottery from the 1930's. Can anyone help me solve this mystery ?? Note: The Roseville "Baneda" vase sure looks similar (see new picture) !
Thanks for any help or expertise.
    -Mike-

A lady on Ebay told me it is definitely not Roseville, so I guess I'm back to square one .

Thank you BELLIN68 ! Not too bad for a $2.00 investment and the Goodwill. They have gotten pretty wise to marked pieces like Haeger and McCoy and price them higher, but this was just sitting there all by it's lonesome. I thought OMG ! When I picked it up and checked it for cracks or chips it was flawless. I paid for it and got out of there as quick as possible....lol. Now I just have to find out who made it and what it's worth. More than $2.00 I'm sure !

This one keeps catching my eye. Any luck yet? Have you tried rookwood and peters and reed? Reminds me of roseville egypto too. Problem, everyone made this color matte back then. Let us know if you find anything.
    4. mikelv85 mikelv85, 11 years ago
No luck yet. It's even stumped Ervin. He said the glaze is similar to Roseville Rookwood and Weller but he didn't think it was any of those. He said try researching the glaze, but like you said everyone made a matte green of some type. I had someone tell me it might be Teco but the shape should be in their catalogs and why no mark ? I just don't know if have something of great value or just a minor piece. Sure would be nice to know ! - Mike -

Just came to me. Maybe it's just someone's old cremation urn...LOL !

I had this picture (at top of page) of a Roseville vase from their "Baneda" line . Minus the decoration and flip the handles, it's the closest thing I've found so far. Maybe mines a blank or a factory reject....lol Still looking -Mike-
    9. nldionne nldionne, 11 years ago
Roseville did have some humdinger shapes. I have seen this shape somewhere but can't remember where. It's hell to get old:)
    10. mikelv85 mikelv85, 11 years ago
Hmm.. don't know I suppose, although there doesn't seem to be any connecting lines top or bottom to complete the letters.Unless they didn't imprint. Maybe it's even roman numerals.
    11. mikelv85 mikelv85, 11 years ago
That's why I thought they might be roman numerals too instead of a line across the top and bottom like 3 capital III.

You boys at it again? You'll find it! Gotta go mow.
    13. mikelv85 mikelv85, 11 years ago
Yep, the wheels are turning on this one....lol My very first post. Think we might get it this time. Eye is on a roll !

He usually is and doesn't give up easily. It took months to solve my first post. It's out there somewhere.
    15. sarahoff sarahoff, 11 years ago
It sure looks like Rosevilles "Baneda" series.
    16. mikelv85 mikelv85, 11 years ago
I think it's a little heavier than Abingdon. They look kind of flimsy and light weight compared to mine. I had a lady on Ebay suggest it might be early Pfaltzgraff, but I never think of them as doing "deco" pieces.

      Still looking

Okey dokey.....lol I've almost forgotten about this piece. It's been put away for months ! :)

I purchased a fake Roseville Montacello early this year and discovered how frequently a pattern of theirs would be mimicked, but with variations to the shape. It's my guess that's what's going on here as well, but I'm no expert.

Your very welcome Mike:) great find!!!
    21. mikelv85 mikelv85, 11 years ago
I've seen the Roseville fakes and they also have a fake Roseville script mark most of the time. A friend of mine here on CW collects and has a lot of Roseville. She even has a few fakes she bought on purpose for comparison. Usually if you're going to deceive you go all the way. This shape is pretty common for this era and most pottery companies have something similar. They copied one and other quite often. Mine seems to be too heavy for Roseville anyway. So many of these pieces aren't marked or had paper and foil labels. You just don't know or may never know who made them.

im in all of agreement with you Mike!!!, they are just so hard to figure out.
    23. aeon aeon, 11 years ago
I neglected to realize that the last photo of yours was only a comparison, not another angle of your vase. Yeah, it seems more likely than an attempt at a fake would have gone so far as to have the floral design as well.
    24. aeon aeon, 11 years ago
*that* an attempt at a fake

its definitely NOT Roseville. absolutely isn't.
    26. mikelv85 mikelv85, 11 years ago
I knew it wasn't Roseville from day one. The vase in picture four is the "closest" thing I found online shape and color wise and just posted for comparison. It's art pottery of some kind but it's still a mystery as to exactly what company made it.
    27. art.pottery, 10 years ago
Stumbled on this vase pic doing an unrelated search. Ok, kind of late on the id but its Pfaltzgraff form a art pottery line they produced briefly circa the 30s (and possibly early 40s)
    28. mikelv85 mikelv85, 10 years ago
Yes, it has been a long time since I even thought about this piece, art.pottery. It's been on the closet shelf for the past year. Someone had mentioned to me that it might be Pfaltzgraff on ebay back then, but I didn't realize they did art pottery. You always think of their Pennsylvania Dutch things and not art deco. Thanks for the confirmation. Wish I could find a catalog with this piece in it. Reminds me of Teco and Fulper as well. That's probably what they were aiming for and why the run was so short. -Mike-

You know I actually find that a much more interesting possibility. This was my very first art pottery piece from well over a year ago. The mystery returns !
    30. upstatenycollector upstatenycollector, 10 years ago
Could you post a closet pic of the decoration? Is it glaze only, or is it incised?
    31. upstatenycollector upstatenycollector, 10 years ago
Closer, not closet... jeez! Fat fingers!!
    32. mikelv85 mikelv85, 10 years ago
Sorry for the confusion upstatencollector......The fourth picture is a Roseville Baneda vase I posted it only for shape comparison. Mine is the first three pictures. Just a plain matte green glaze. No decoration at all.
    33. mikelv85 mikelv85, 10 years ago
No problem id :)...... it's nice to have the help with the research. I've pretty much exhausted myself with this one...lol
    34. upstatenycollector upstatenycollector, 10 years ago
That's what I get for not paying attention to detail. Thanks Mike!
    35. mikelv85 mikelv85, 10 years ago
You know id I've been told everything from it's a Chinese fake and everything in between but there's still no definitive proof for any of it. This piece just refuses to be identified. It's very art deco in my opinion and the color is perfect for the era but the maker is the only piece of the puzzle that's missing. Sometimes there's nothing left to do but enjoy it for what it is. :)

You mentioned this post in your 1K thread, so I thought I would take a look at your mystery vase. art.pottery IDed it as Pfaltzgraff 30s Art Deco, I did a Google search and was amazed at the images, not at all what I associate with Pfaltzgraff, of course by the time I was buying that brand, it was all about brown stoneware.

Anyway, as often happens, by learning something new on CW, not two days later I came across a Pfaltzgraff Art Deco vase myself! And the seller not knowing what she had sold it to me at a bargain price. So thanks, Mike! :)

You're welcome Katherine :)...hope you'll post it I'm dying to see what you found. I'm still not 100% sure what this one is. Guess I'd need a catalog picture to convince me from back in the day...lol.
