Found this and have hung it on my wall but am curious as to what it was a part of. The bottom center has a wood dowel still in place & there are two holes on either bottom sides where a dowel I believe use to be. The wood appears to be oak and very hard. I think it could be a top decorative piece to a much larger piece of furniture. It measures 55" long, 1 1/4" deep and 8 1/4" tall in the center. Would love to hear from anyone who has a guess or has since something similar to this before. Thank you.

Hi Karen: I agree, many possibilities, top of a mirror, top edge of a sideboard, top of a headboard, upsidedown on a table between the two legs...

      Very nice, thanks for showing,

      TA

I've posted another picture to perhaps help see it better. The piece is all wood. There is a small portion at the end missing that was probably veneer but most isn't veneer that you see in the pictures. No iron associated with this piece. If it were an architectural pediment, then why the wooden dowel at the bottom? I never thought about a pediment so have been looking on-line at the possiblities. TubeAmp is thinking what I'm thinking as it would be part of furniture like a sideboard. It is very old I imagine because of the varnish or whatever has bubbled on parts of it.

Thank you everyone for your comments. You all were a big help and kind people. I just love this site! I'm going to mark this as solved. I'm comfortable with it being a pediment as you all suggested. I did post two new pictures of what it looks like now after being cleaned up, painted, & glazed. I love it hanging over my window in the living room. I wish the piece could talk though and tell me what all it has seen, where it has been, and the family (ies) that it has watched grow & come & go. Blessings to you all.

Nice job with the paint, it looks real good! Most exterior wood trim would be soft wood and would not likely have anywhere near the fine detail, as it would not be seen anyway from a distance, and was meant to be painted. This looks defiantly as TubeAmp has described .

Phil was referring to an inside doorway pediment see #4 " large parlour"
