Hard to say without seeing it in person, but I suspect you may have a piece of Webb Alexandrite. If so, you've got quite a rare find.

It's got great coloring, but I don't think it's Alexandrite. Alexandrite is more like an amberina than this is.
    3. twentiethc, 11 years ago
That's certainly a possibility as well. I first considered plated Amberina, but I have never seen it without a white interior. As you say, color is excellent. If it is Amberina, it looks like it has a very strong Fuchsia transition color. Either way, a nice find.

Definitely not plated amberina. the color goes all teh way to the bottom. it's not any kind of amberina.

      this is plated amberina.

part of the glass looks like amberina but the purple stripes go all the way to the base. in both plated amberina (ignoring the lack of lining on this piece) and alexandrite the color is definitely in two halfs unlike this one where the color reaches to the base in ribs.

So this would have been made by the New England Glass Company?
      Fabulous colours!

no, this is not plated amberina. the plated amberina is in the pic from live auctioneers. this is NOT that.

      Any idea of the maker?
    9. twentiethc, 11 years ago
I agree with Greatsnowyowl in that it is not plated Amberina ... though we got there considering different characteristics. However, I'm not certain which company it is. I still feel New England, Mt. Washington, or Webb are the most likely manufacturers, but I have not found anything definitive ... just characteristics (shape, pontil treatment, stripes, etc.).

That said, I am still interested in hearing from other on their theories. I think this is a great mystery piece, and I'd like to know more about it in case I come across one in the future. I'm sure mf1456 would like a final answer too :)

BTW, thanks for posting this one mf1456. I do love a good mystery!

I have a piece that is stylistically similar but dissimilar in coloring. Mine is Legras. the coloring is so different though..

      http://www.thegildedcurio.com/item-Legras-737.html

but it is two toned (sort of but with an opalescent shading thru the upper half of the red) with cream stripes going thru the red. they both seem to have a ring of color at the base as well.
