    Holland Serving fork in the windmill style. Marks include HOLLAND in a square at approx 9 oclock. On the reverse side of the handle is a 90% and 2 marks I really cant make out. Any help dating this piece and any info about this fork would be appreciated....And also is it "sterling"........Thank you

      From what I understand Dutch hallmarks are somewhat confusing.
      Vetraio may be able to help as he did with the help of miKKoChristmas11 on this post;

      This is the best intro page I've seen for Dutch marks:

      Thx Vetraio......A very informative piece..I will definately hold on to this...

      I am having trouble w/ the 90% mark and really the first mark almost looks to me like a 5:1 mark meaning ?? Could it quite easily be saying 5:1 or 90 %?

      The other thing too is the middle mark.
      To me that is the number 52 in Arabic.

      I'm just confused.
      Mixed messages.

      There is this mention of 90% as a silver mark on an Asian piece.

      I have seen this before. The first mark, I believe, reads "SN". SN is the symbol for tin. 90% means that you have that much tin. Thus your item is made of pewter, not sterling.

      http://www.pewtersociety.org/pewter/what-is-pewter/

      I posted an item with a similar marking, it was marked, "SN 95%" I was confused but I found an explanation of it online somewhere, I can't find it now though. I will keep looking. Here is my item:

      Thank you BHock for the information
      Ok so my next question is Does pewter tarnish the same way that silver does, because this was very tarnished. I cleaned it with tarn x & silver polish and it really brightened it up........

      Thank you again for the info.......

      From this site, link provided below;
      Pewter does not tarnish like silver, so a periodic clean with an all-purpose metal (not silver) polish will keep it looking bright.

      Thank you Walksoftly..........This fork was very tarnished in typical blackish look. Maybe it is Silver over pewter.........90% being the pewter and having been covered in a thin layer of silver........

      I am not sure, I assume walksoftly is correct. Like I said above, I know pewter does turn a color, not sure if it is tarnish or not. If you try to polish pewter, It will come off gray. Not sure if it is good to polish or not. Thanks everyone.

      I am curious...did you do a magnet test? Just curious.
    19. Truthisanarrow08 Truthisanarrow08, 8 years ago
      Yes I did and it did not stick to the fork.........
    20. BHock45 BHock45, 8 years ago
      I mean, it could be silver plate, but usually it is a "90". The percent sign, I am just saying, I have seen on pewter. Best of luck!
