I found this very beautiful projector speaker box for sale here in Brazil and bought it with a project in mind: to build a guitar amplifier from it.

This was originally a 16mm Victor Animatograph Projector speaker, from the late 1930's. It is pretty beat up, the cabinet is missing its original covering material (canvas) in some parts, it is missing the back and front covers, the speaker cone is a mess...but it has the gorgeous speaker grille intact!

    The cabinet measures 18,5" (W) x 16,5" (H) x 8,5" (D)

The speaker is a huge 12" probably early Jensen (12PH16A), 16 Ohm. I am not an electronics specialist and I know I will need all the help I can find to have the amplifier built. Apparently, this speaker is a field coil one, I am not sure. It has a magnet on it, not a very strong one but it also has a transformer connected to it and that's why I believe it is a field coil type. Anyone who knows more about these old speakers, please correct me if I am wrong.

Any ideas for the amplifier will also be very welcome!

Still waiting for some expert to check this and tell me more about the speaker. Please guys, pass the word if you know someone who could help. I wanted to know if it is possible to repair the cone and if there's a amplifier out there that would fit an old field coil speaker like this (if it is really a field coil). Thank you!

Thank you fifties50s! I will surely do it. I tried to find information on these speakers and in some websites it is mentioned that these field coils speakers work like electromagnets and are fed by currents that can be dangerous and that's why I will need an old school expert to check it. Maybe it would be a better idea to replace this speaker with a newer Jensen.

Hey Phil, this was a great find, thank you! I would never find it, since the video has a wrong title. It is not a RCA Victor speaker, it is from an earlier period. In the video the guy mentions that the original speaker doesn't have a proper sound, so I believe that replacing it with an alnico Jensen will be the way to go, Thanks again, and for the love too.

I am posting this comment to register new info on the speaker: apparently it is an Utah AlNiCo speaker, not a field coil. I am still trying to find infomation on the codes. 12PH16A: 12 (12 inch speaker) P (AlNiCo as in the Jensens?) H (???) 16 (16 Ohm) A (???). It is important to have the codes explained to determine the amp power.
