Located in the charming village of Berstett in area called "Kochersberg" also called "the breadbasket", the museum invites you to discover the shops, businesses, and know-how old the north of Strasbourg.
The course starts Schiltigheim, first city "outside the walls" north of Strasbourg, which developed from the late eighteenth century through the successive establishment of many breweries, forced out of Strasbourg fortifications in order to be able to develop . The exceptional quality of the water table Schiltigheim and abundance of resources contributed to the development of the future "city of brewers."
In the nineteenth century with the arrival of the railway, the development of the northern towns and villages of Strasbourg was growing up. The Rotunda of the old yard, was moved to this new axis that allowed the city of Bischheim, with the installation of future SNCF workshops to develop its business and craft.
The new suburbs were also popular places of the Strasbourg in search of entertainment, with the creation of numerous appointments sites, equivalent to Parisian dancing halls may be mentioned the WHITE HORSE in Schiltigheim, GREEN PINE in Bischheim, or the famous FUCHS AM BUCKEL popular then ....
This new attraction of the northern suburbs of Strasbourg grows during the creation of the first line of horse-drawn and electric tram at the end of the nineteenth century which then connected Kehl German border town at the terminus of Hoenheim.
This new means of transport allowed the development of various shops, department stores Jung, drugstores, hardware stores, grocery stores, chair factory, enamelware factory, brickworks, various factories and industries, starch, various of the largest breweries in more craft.
This expansion also allowed the development of many services to citizens, such as public baths, or PAULUS BAD Schiltigheim in the hygienist movement of the time. Other features were born as the savings bank in Schillickois bistros, so the letter box or each client had its "savings box". Feature we also found in the taverns of northern France, high working population.
The museum tells of a time sense wherever we wanted everyone to have a living, an equitable social policy, as in Schiltigheim or each newcomer received a piece of land in the ried to support herself .. .. the ancestor of allotments.
