Léon ELCHINGER (1871-1942)

Ceramist, draughtsman, painter in watercolours Born in Soufflenheim on December 3, 1871 and deceased on February 8, 1942 in its native village. The artist comes from a line from potters and active tile makers in Alsace dice the middle of the XVIIIe century. His wife, Antoinette SCHMITT, raise of Marie-Joseph ERB, teach the piano and the organ of which it remains interpreter until his death in 1949. In 1888, the craftsman enters in training course the workshops Villeroy and Boch to the Saar, then becomes pupil of the Ceramics School of Höhr-Grenzhausen close to Coblentz in Germany. It goes then to the School of the Art schools of Nancy, in the section modelling and sculpture where it obtains a second price for its Ancient studies “and Nature”. On his return in Strasbourg in 1891, Leon ELCHINGER joined the School of Decorative Arts. It meets there the glassmaker Henri OTT and the illustrator Henri LOUX. Anton SEDER, principal, entrusts the decoration of the frontage to him. The ceramist realizes according to his paperboards of the polychrome ceramics panels glazed, of Jugendstil invoice, which decorate still today the principal wall of entry: elegant female allegories are reproduced Archaeology, Architecture, the Geometry, Painting, Science and the Sculpture on more than two meters in height. Are added the armorial bearings of Strasbourg and Alsace around the entry, the symbols of the trades of art as well as floral bases and medallions decorative. Leon ELCHINGER integrates the paternal workshop with his brothers, Charles and Victor. In 1895, a fountain with the watery allegories is preceded then acquired by the cantonal museum of Bern (Swiss). Victor deals with the monitoring of the workshops while Leon deals with the side creative and artistic company because he is a also draughtsman and painter in watercolours. It develops a new sandstone flame technique and glossed, with enamels with metal reflections (gold, money, bronze, tin) which it uses for interior or external ceramics. It will develop later this material for the religious statuary. This facet of its work testifies to its deep catholic faith (his/her son junior, Arthur, will become bishop of Strasbourg). The young craftsman weaves close links with his colleagues of the school of Karlsruhe. It collaborates with Konrad TAUSCHER, Alfred KUSCHE and the sculptor Berliner Robert RAUSCHERT. A purse of State (1896) enables him to go in trip studies to the Stooke-one-Trent (the United Kingdom) where he visits the porcelain factories Minton, Doulton but especially Weedgwood. The following year, it attends for eight month the manufacture of Zolnay with Pecs (Hungary) whose Jugendstil production refers. It also goes to the Herend factory very close to the lake Balaton, not far from the Austrian border and, before returning to Alsace, it passes by Italy where it studies the Masters florentins of Quattrocento, Luca and Andrea della Robbia, source of decisive inspiration in its late step towards the Sacred art. Its travel souvenirs will appear under the P. pseudonym. ARLIQUET. To the return of his tour through Europe, Leon ELCHINGER comes into contact with Charles SPINDLER. Being pressed on their rich person regional culture, the artists and craftsmen of the Circle of Saint-Léonard contribute to the restoration of decorative Arts by their presence with the World Fairs of the beginning of the century: in Paris in 1900, Turin en1902, Saint-Louis in the USA in 1904, Dresden in 1906, Leipzig in 1908. For workshop ELCHINGER a collaboration with Tiffany will follow, the prestigious house of American creation. These years will see tying indéfectibles friendships with Auguste CAMMISSAR and George RITLENG, of profitable collaborations with Charles SPINDLER, Alfred MARZOLFF, Jean-Desired RINGEL Of ILLZACH but also with famous German ceramists, max LAEUGER and August HERBORTH. But Leon ELCHINGER does not neglect for as much not his former school-fellows of the School of Nancy, in particular Joseph and Pierre MOUGIN. It holds permanent living room at the House of Art of Lorraine, street Stanislas. After the Large War, it takes share with the great movement of commemoration of the soldiers fallen to the face. Oratories, currently in the course of census, remain with the cemetery Saint Nicolas's Day de Haguenau and of Artolsheim, in Richtolsheim, Auenheim, Egersheim and Schwabwiller (Betschdorf), like in the churches of Niederbronn and Hoerdt.Among his achievements, one retains, in addition to the panels of the School of the Decorative Arts of Strasbourg, now classified, the Dolphin and the Monkey carried out with RINGEL Of ILLZACH to the Park of the Orangery of Strasbourg, the fountain Gockelsbad de Haguenau, restored with the family in 1910, the large Holyone of Oelberg de Soufflenheim (1932), main road of cross of the Mount Holy-Odile (1934), that of Notre-Dame de Lourdes in Nancy, preceded during the Nationale exposure of Christian art in 1935 and Paris in 1937. After a six year old bracket, of 1912 to 1918, during which it exercises the mandate of advising general of the canton of Bischwiller, Leon ELCHINGER adapts the aesthetic guns Art Déco and exposes new productions to the forms stylized and geometrical in the Parisian department stores. The following generations with Fernand, Marc and today Thibaud ELCHINGER knew each one with their manner of developing the workshop in true industry and of adapting to their time. The ceramist of Soufflenheim is today exposed with the Museum of Orsay in Paris, Mathildehöhe of Darmstadt in Germany and the Museum Ny Glyptotek of Copenhagen in Denmark, the Museum of Modern art and Contemporary of Strasbourg and to the Historical Museum of Haguenau (collection Art nouveau). A retrospective “Sacred art” as well as a reasoned catalogue of its works are under development by Marc ELCHINGER, his grandson.
