I dug a rut in a driveway one time and came up with over two hundred marbles. That was 40 years ago, so quite a few were interesting but mostly beat all to pieces--they had been there a long time, probably lost in a mud puddle long ago. Recently I saw marbles used in a concrete grave stone--they were all 1930's vintage Akros and Peltiers and slags--you could not read it anymore, but you could guess the date, and come close to the age and the likely sex of the child buried there.
