Help! What is this? It is brass and one end slides out, but it is stuck. The rod is bent and not resting in the hole in the other end. I am at a loss to begin a web search because I am completely clueless.

Thank you so much! Two words ("chinese lock") and a google search answered my questions. I try to tell my high school students that knowing what questions to ask is the first step to solving a problem...... in this case, knowing the right persons to ask led to the the answer!
I bought this for a dollar at a flea market. I'll go back next month to the same table to see if he has the key, now that I know what to look for. Thank you so much for educating a teacher.

By the way, you need to change the status to "Solved" Thanks.

I did see several examples of keys so I will keep my eye out. My engineering brother had managed to "pick" the lock just minutes before my answer came. We had guessed that it must have been some kind of child's puzzle toy! I posted another picture of it opened. Mystery Solved!

ps....jason.... i teach high schoolers in an alternative setting... for the majority of them, we are their last chance at a high school diploma. My forte is science and math, but I love any kind of learning. I am going to show this to my "lock experts" and I'll be the one "picking" their brains!! After they have stewed for a while, I am also going to show them the post and how easy it was to find the answer once someone had shared their knowledge with me! Vocabulary is still King!!! Mrs. K =:)

That would be a field trip I would have to chaperon!:) Thank you myteachermrsk, as a teenager I was a delinquent and if it had not been for a few brave and caring teachers like your self I would have gave up on school completely.
