Lake Shore & Michigan Southern brass top bellbottom railroad lantern made by the Buffalo Steam Gauge & Lantern Co in Buffalo, NY, in the late 1870's. This unusual lantern is prominently marked L.S. & M.S. on the base in 1-inch letters. The unique, flashed ruby globe is wheel cut with L.S. & M. S. Ry. and is the same diameter at the top and bottom, and is 5-3/8-inches tall. The chimney is larger in diameter than the normal no. 39-style lantern, making this style unique among railroad lanterns of this era and from this manufacturer. The chimney also has a sliding collar ( an 1878, C.T. Ham patented invention) which adjusts the upper globe holding mechanism to the correct globe height for a secure globe fit. The key hole filigree in the chimney, as well as the large appearance compared with no. 39 lanterns of this era gives this piece a particularly keen eye appeal.
