Hoo! Hoo! Yes, this is an owl corkscrew!
See how he’s sleeping with his arms down? And in the other picture he is WIDE awake!
And WHO patented it? On March 17, 1936 Richard Smythe applied for a patent, but not granted one until April 26 1938!
This is a “Double Lever” type. As you twist the entire piece, the corkscrew is drawn down into the cork, and the arms rise upwards. Then you can use both levers to pull down and the cork will come out of the bottle.
The user can also do many other things with this piece! Can you spot them all? There are a total of 4 “proclaimed” utilities this owl can perform (including extracting a cork). Answers at the bottom of this posting.

I love this one. How did you finally locate one as they are supposed to be very rare? Can you recommend any sources where I could look for similar rare corkscrews/antique barware, as I am just getting started as a collector. Thanks
