For those collectors who may not have found the following page,
http://www.silvercollection.it/dictionaryoverlayglass.html , it might be of interest to be able to closely date certain Webster Sterling-over-glass trivets and coasters.
The Webster Co was founded in 1869 and produced trivets and coasters with the same beautiful floral pattern from the 1880's to at least 1940.
Silver-overlay-on-glass was first successful in 1883 (Erard) but it tarnished on the side next to the glass.
Those produced from 1895 were done with the new method (patented by Scharling in 1893) which did NOT tarnish against the glass.
Tarnished examples date from 1883 to 1895 only. These may be labeled as antiques in the US market.
