RARE! ORIGINAL INFLUENTIAL WORK ON SLAVERY-EMANCIPATION
Original 1836 Edition of “Slavery” by William Channing. Channing was an American Unitarian minister and author, born in Newport Rhode Island. At 23 he was ordained minister of the Federal St. Congregational Church where he served from 1803 until his death in 1842. Channing considered slavery to be an unspeakable evil, placing it in the same category as war, but reserving a special abhorrence for civil war. "Channing's plea was for humanitarianism and tolerance in religion rather than for a new creed. Not only a great preacher but a lucid writer, Channing influenced many American authors, including Emerson and other transcendentalists and Holmes and Bryant." His writings on slavery helped prepare the way for emancipation.
