Fisherman - Chinese God? Japanese? Indian?

This came from a family member who did anthropological work in Asia, a little in South America, and in the South Pacific - any ideas as to where it's from?? We have no idea where to start! It's carved wood with gold-colored leaf on top. I like that even the feet are carved in, on the underside of the piece.
