This gas mask and cannister would be carried by land based Kriegsmarine personnel such as coastal artillery and infantry troops. Gas masks were very rarely used during the war, but they were carried just in case. Some soldiers used the cannister to carry other items. Inside the cover is a compartment for storing spare lenses which prevented the eye pieces from fogging up while in use. The last photo shows the Kriegsmarine acceptance stamp, an eagle over an M.
