Animal sculpture??

I,m at a loss with this one here..
This was given to me by my neighbor. She was afraid of it and was going to throw it away. I love weird stuff but she couldn't tell me what it is or where it comes from. There are numbers i think on back and it does have some unique markings on it and its legs are carved curling upward. I am so curious to why that is. I know its an animal of some sort and thats about it. Any one have any knowledge on what this is and why its legs are carved that way?
