From the late 1940's, this is a motive power brochure from the Lackawanna Railroad. This brochure is similar to the PRR one that I recently posted. This brochure shows all of the latest steam and diesel motive power plus some older "relics" still used in daily service. (The older, lighter power existed for local freight and branchline duties where engine size would be restricted or large engines just were not needed.) The brochure also gives a brief overview and history of the Lackawanna Railroad. Unlike the PRR, the Lackawanna was not very history minded, so not much Lackawanna motive power survives. Just 2 steam locomotives (a 2-6-0 at Steamtown in Scranton and a 4-4-0 Camelback in St. Louis) survive along with a few diesels. A number of "recreated" Lackawanna diesels operate in a couple places. (A diesel is a pretty easy item to masquerade since they are off an assembly line and in most cases a coat of paint is the only difference between different railroads). The Lackawanna had some mighty fine steam power, built specifically for their purpose and operating conditions. It is a shame that none of that power was preserved for future generations to enjoy. Everyone knows about New York Central's famous 4-6-4 Hudson locomotives. The Lackawanna only had five 4-6-4's, but they weighed 9,000lbs more and produced 11,000 lbs more tractive effort than the almighty NYC models.

All fine locomotives. A pair of impressive steam locomotives and a nice trio of F units.
