Unknown Origin

Chair was left in a home I purchased some time ago. The center cane seat had deteriorated and was covered by a piece of loose backboard and one of back chair spokes is broken out. I was going to throw it out but it is small and so sturdy I could store in a closet and use for additional seating if needed. It measures approx. 35"+ from top of back to floor, seat is 15" wide and graduates from 15" to 13" at the back. It is hard to describe the finish - I want to say perhaps some crude oil or perhaps coal product. I did try to clean it up before I installed the false seat (plywood, foam, upholstered and velcroed onto frame). It was cost-prohibitive for me to have it re-caned. It is obviously handmade and the only screws are the two at the back which go into the seat. Does anyone out there have any idea where this might have originated. I like to think it was made by some mountain folks in the Smokies or Appalachians?? :)
