I picked this rocker up today at a thrift store in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. I've been told that it's a press-back, and my daughter and I did some digging on the Internet and came to the conclusion that it's Victorian-era. Some of the scroll-work is broken off of it, but to me that only adds to its charm. I'm pretty sure it's made of oak. It measures about 40 inches high, 33 inches long, and 22 inches wide. All the spindles are solid. If anyone can add more information to that, I'd certainly appreciate it.
I would venture to say it is a double press back, probably made during or just before the depression. What you refer to as scroll work is commonly called grapevine scroll or trim. Not all was actually grapevine but a good deal of it was. Usually oak or ash wood. I doubt the seat is original. The seat you show was a popular replacement around the 1950's. Good luck with your research.
I forgot to mention, look closely under the arms. Many chairs were marked by the maker on the underside of the arm.
