Hello I have just rediscovered this antique nut cracker, found it years ago but don’t know anything about it, has some silver marks so could be something that’s collected, I’ve seen on tv that corkscrews & things that can be used are still in demand

Yes, vintage kitchen items are always good sellers. And nutcrackers are popular collectibles.

It looks like yours says, "S & co"? If do, that's Sargent and company.

Thanks dav great help with the links, some great information on Sargent as I had never heard of them . This cracker is like yours in that you flip it over & change size for bigger nuts. Or fingers LOL
Great item, used this type to crack open walnuts etc, very efficient
I believe it is a Silverplate mark (S&Co) of Spurrier & Co from Birmingham, England.

All the nutcrackers, including mine that I have seen (of this era)are cast iron. Let's ask Steptoe, but I believe any silver you see is light reflection?
Additionally I don't see any evidence that company made nutcrackers? It appears they made trays, etc?
The company I mentioned has several different nutcrackers with markings on them. Here's a table version from the 1800s..

Ok, so I guess it makes sense that the rich people would have some fancy silver plated stuff. The examples I've seen of the Victorian era all seem to be this style nutcracker. I did find one example with ebony handles. They all look super fancy and lots of silver...

Hi thanks for the help guys , yes it’s silver plated, no idea how old tho, I’m tempted to clean it as I would have years ago. They say you shouldn’t but love seeing things how they would have looked when new.
Ok, I was wrong then. It looked like just a regular cast iron one to me. Interesting to see if that company made any nutcrackers..
