My grandmother had a necklace with similar stones that she said was blue coral. This is heavier than it looks and most of the beads are smooth but some feel porous or a little rough. Does anyone know what the beads are?

I would guess that the stone is Lapis. I have never heard of a blue coral.
There is a blue coral. This link (if I can make it work) shows similar beads that are blue coral. http://moonlightminingco.com/Coral_Jewelry1.htm I'll have to do a little research on lapis. Thanks.
Huh! Learn something new every day. This is just another reason why this site is so great. Thanks for the link. And your necklace certainly resembles the blue coral in your link.
Wish I could find my grandmother's old blue coral necklace. It seems to me the beads were smaller and more porous. Glad I could steer you to something new. :)
