He is 11 inches tall and what is called Tang Pottery. The seller claimed the figure had a small hole under the arm but could not find any other defects, chips or damages. When pottery is kiln fired you need a small hole for gasses to escape, the hole is not a defect or damage. I see a lot of Tang pottery horses, camels and musician reproductions, but have never seen this figure. Anyone know who this person with a bird is?
This one is kiln fired but same figure. Lady holding a bird is not much to go on. You would think with the curator salary over $65,000.00 a year the title "Lady with a bird" is a no brainer?
Being a common Tang dynasty tomb statue my guess is she represents "Jingwei filling the sea" meaning a symbol of dogged determination and perseverance in the face of seemingly impossible odds. The most important aspect of the bird’s divinity in China, and indeed the world’s mythology, was its identity with the soul. This could represent the story of immortality and vengeance. Just a guess?
