When I first started placing items on this site, I put multiple pics up on the same page and only showed one pic of each basket. I wanted to do some over so I could add more detailed pictures of them. Hope nobody minds.
This is a basket made by the Makah tribe. The Makah also lived on the Pacific Northwest Coast and were called "outsiders" by the Nootka. However, their weaving is very similar to the Nootka. The basket is made from Cattail Leaves, Sea grass and Cedar strips. The colors came from natural dyes. They also used aniline dyes too and those would fade which is why alot of baskets seen now days only have color on the inside (that was kept out of the sunlight). This one is older, probably from around 1900. Enjoy the pics.
