Bought at a yard sale. I know nothing about it. I figured 25.00 wasn't too much to spend on a machine to learn how to sew. Can anyone tell me anything about it? How old? serial # 299625
It's missing the metal thingie that holds the spool.Pyrex dish is working just fine to hold my thread. It sews good, if I knew how to sew. Metal plate says made in Japan.
This is my first post. I hope I did this right.

sewhappy : Your machine is what is called a clone of a Singer class 15 machine . There were a lot of them made in Japan under a lot of different names . They are good machines and bulit every bit as good as the old Singers . I have several of them . One was my grandmothers and it is my go to machine for stright stitching on just about everything . There are several groups on the internet that help people with their vintage sewing machines such as helping them with finding parts . One of them is called " wefixit " shade tree mechanics .

These machines are post WW2, date around late 1940's. You should be able to get a new spool pin from a sewing machine dealer. You need to know if you need a tap-in or screw-in type, you may be able to tell by shining a light into the hole where the pin should be. I'd be interested to know if the rods on the underside of the machine are stamped with 'State' or not, and whether the underside of the faceplate (the fancy end cover over the needlebar) is stamped with anything?

No # on the bars. I'm afraid to look under the needlebar. LOL I might mess something up.

The faceplate should come off easily with 2 screws - it's joined to the tension dial and you won't mess anything up by removing, just slip it up and over the thread take-up lever :)

Little stamp that says trade mard sk.
  9. sewhappy, 2 years ago
oops I meant trade mark and the thread thingie is tap in not threaded.

:) I also have a Japanese made machine with the SK mark and the faceplate design is the same. I wish I could tell you who made them. My theory about the faceplates is they were a part that was purchased in by the sewing machine maker, and don't necessarily mean the machines themselves were made in the same place.
You should be able to get a replacement spool pin - metal, tap-in type, from a sewing machine repair dealer or online.

    You're welcome :)
Scour your manual for hints or hidden information - a copyright date would give you a close date for the machine, any reference to a company name other than the New York 'State Sewing Machine Company' - which may or may not have been a real company, etc.
