This is where 960 fighters and their families made their last stand against the Romans for several years following the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE. Before they committed suicide rather than being enslaved by the Romans, their leader Elazar Ben Yair proclaimed "We shall remain free men," and these words are inscribed on the medal.
