I have been very lucky lately. I hope Dave sees this, as I am not sure it is Jade, but I am learning, it is very cool to the touch and pocket knife will not scratch! so much for amateur test! What is this disk for? Too big to wear around the neck, this is from local Cat thrift store, they have a room in store with cats for adoption. They get the best things from clothes to paintings! The Chevy dealer gave them a new Corvette a couple years ago and they sold 100 raffle tickets at $500. each! Also taxes were paid! The real name of the store is "The Pick of the Litter"! Many items I have shown here are from there! Anyone knows history of Jade Koi disk haha or what it is for, please let me know! With all my heart I believe it is Jade! but still good for the price!
Cannot tell for sure, but it looks neither the quality of jadeite nor nephrite I would collect. The price says it all. =) Frankly, cool to touch and scratch test are overrated IMO. This shape can be called Huan or Ring, a relative of the disc Bi that we commonly hear about. Difference between the inner and outer diameters. The history of Huan can be traced back to the Zhou dynasty, mostly found as ornaments on the body or part of an archaic necklace set. However, Kois were never the subject back then until modern times. These modern carvings are very stiff, chunky and most likely mass produced as decorative pieces.
Do not go by price always for sure. From this store I have a large oil by John Plumer Ludlum, A Sunday Snoopy comic signed by Charles Schulz, (I took to Schulz Museum here to verify), Three Japanese woodblock prints, some Japanese and Chinese vases I sold for over two thousand. I hope they do not see this. I could go on and on. 4 Chinese God like ivory figures I sold. I had a vase, Chinese and Clar's Auction said it was worth maybe $100. I sold it at another auction house for $800+. It is difficult to find the truth, I trust you of course, but everyone needs to see items in person for quality assessment. This may be worth only $5.00 but with a light it glows and I see deep into it, I get a good feeling sometimes, and go with it! Thanks Dave I also just bought two other items! I will post when they arrive! I want all the advice I can get, that is how I learn. bye for now!
