Sterling Silver handle brass blade found in Va in 1966

My dad found this in Va/Md around mid 1960's while surveying. We all assumed it is a letter opener. The handle is solid sterling silver, the blade is made of brass. It was found in a wooded area less than a foot underground. That's all I know about it.
