Hi, I believe this is Japanese, as the figure on the left is wearing a topknot indicative of Samurai. Also, from the pictures and your description, it is moriage. Moriage is a type of raised decoration typically used on Japanese pottery. Pieces of clay were shaped by hand and applied to the item; or the clay was squeezed from a tube in the manner of cake decoration. I can see no mark on the base, only a swirl in the clay. The decoration on the side does not appear to be intended as a mark. However, unmarked moriage can be quite valuable and is frequently, but not always Meiji (1868-1917). The following are examples of Meiji era and later moriage, although they are marked. Hope this helps a little. Best wishes, Jim
