What is it?

I found this in a resale store in an old farming and mining area, it was with a couple of old barn pulleys. It has raised letters on one end, the makers name, looks like Hodmand or Rodmann, N.Y.C. 5/8 or 3/8 WEDGE. I'd love to know what it is, any ideas are appreciated!
