Neat corrugated drum. In the US prior to 1990s, potentially hazardous substances shipped in drums had to marked with raised lettering that identified specific drum attributes, including the year the drum was manufactured. I imagine the Canadian govt required a similar type of marking. Take a look at the bottom of your drum, or a closer look at the top. There should be some raised lettering and numbers in a roughly trinomial layout, like 18-55-48. The first number will tell you the gauge steel used to make the drum (likely 18 or 20), the next number will tell you the number of gallons (likely 45 or 55), and the last two digits should tell you the year the drum was made (for example, 48 means 1948). There should also be some letters there that are the name or initials of the drum manufacturers name, like Rheem or GCSB for Gulf Coast Steel Barrel. Let me know what you find; I am curious if Canada and US followed similar regulations prior to international shipping standards. More recent drums have a long list of numbers like UN 1A1/X1.4/300/10/1.2/.S/1.2 208L which represent an international shipping standard code for fuel drums.
