What are these?

I got these at a storage unit auction. I have not seen chairs like these before. I do not know if they are set up properly or if they should be switched but I just have them in my garage. They do need to be recovered but the shape of these I find unique. Any help would be appreciated as to what kind of chairs they are and maybe an estimate to age. They are wood that look like they are hand carved.
