Sticking with my love of Magnavox transistor radios, I found this on ebay. Uses a traditional transistor chassis, coupled with a decent sized speaker and a very long ferrite bar antenna. Pretty impressive sound from a large portable. It runs on a 9 volt battery. Although it was designed for a much larger and higher capacity 9 volt, it functions just fine on a standard rectangular. I replaced all the electrolytics and a few resistors. It still is a bit loud at the lowest volume setting, a problem I suspect is in the volume control. Going to be interesting hunting a replacement down. But it's not critical as it plays strong and clear, if a bit loud, to enjoy my oldies station.
