I picked this up at an antique store for $1. I thought it was worth more than that so I bought it.

What you actually have is a tin used for a gross (144 sticks) of chalk. Years ago, they referred to many of the art mediums as crayons: chalk, colored pencils and wax crayons. Today, we distinguish between these. These tins replaced the heavier dove-tailed wooden boxes used for this from the mid-1800s. The tins came along by the late 20s and with the exception of WWII when there was a metal shortage, they were used into the 50s by some companies. This particular one is a Sargents which is a brand still produced to this day. You can see more than 50 different tins like this at my web site at http://www.crayoncollecting.com
