Received the navy items in the mail yesterday from the wife of a deceased Navy Veteran. He was aboard the USS Van Voorhis a Destroyer
Escort (DE-1028). What caught my eye is the chief's hat emblem with one star at the top I know this is a senior chief, but when was the star moved from the above the "S" to the top of the anchor. Included are the older dog tags with the notch at the bottom.

   Good question as to the relocation of the star. I have a hard time seeing it as correct in the lower version. I believe these are likely different manufacturers and their placements.
   
   The NAVY's own site shows one, midway between these two.

   I'm with you, I think it's different companies I don't think that it would be one of those things the Navy would regulate very hard.
