This doesn't look like a confederate bill, it looks more like a note or bond. It has nothing on the back. It says Twelve months after date Confederate States of America - No 297 will pay the bearer No 297 One Thousand Dollars with interest at 10 cents pr day.
Montgomery, the hand written date looks like May, 28, 1861
Signed by: Alex B. Glitheratt ? Register and Ed Elmorey Treasuer. The name spelling is kind of hard to distinguish.
Is this real, what is it, is it a good find? Value?

Is the paper brittle or is it stiff andwrinkled?
It's not brittle at all, I can hold it at one end and it will have a slight bend. It is wavy. The paper almost looks like an oil soak finish if you know what I mean>
I know exactly what you mean, that usually means its a reproduction. Look real close, does it say reproduction or copy anywhere?
No I don't see that on it, the very bottom reads receivable in payment of all dues except export duties. But looking at it with a magnifying glass the the discoloration across the top and some of the print quality comes into question.
So it's not an intentional reproduction (from souvenir shops ex.) Here is a site that I hope will be of some help:
http://www.rebelstatescurrency.com/reproductions.html
Thanks, that helped. I found the serial number and it looks like a worthless reproduction. Thanks goodness I through it into a bundle as an add on so I'm not out much. I hate learning lessons the hard way. :(
Yeah I hate when that happens. For the future, money that old almost has a tattered cloth feel to it. I have a few Civil War repros that I bought (knowingly) at a gift shop and they are exactly how you described.
Thanks, I appreciate it.
You're welcome.
i have that same bill-same no-same date-i have has it for over 30 yrs found it in a old book at a salvation army store-but mine is kinda raggedy and darker looking color but the back is old dull green colored with the same as the front on it-i know this bill was repoduced yrs ago from trying to find ot about my own,but i have wondered if they were repoduced from the one i have!the book was from bishopville,sc-i think someone died and the stuff was donated to salvation army store,i had mine since i was a child-i will post it soon any more info would be nice-there should be a real one-the orignal somewhere right!?
Genuine Confederate bills are printed on both sides. The Oil Soaked look is to make it look like vellum. No genuine bill was printed on vellum. The real note is multi-colored. The signature ink is usually rusty brown, ... because it was made with Iron-Oxide (rust).
More like this one ...

Homero Aranda ... if it is exactly as the one above, .... it is worthless, as the one above is not real.
so is there the real one layin around somewhere.......and i have a lot of old money and coins i wonder if thats worth anything
Homero ... Yes there ARE real ones.
I have the exact bill. It's part of a repo set I bought at a gift shop at Houston Airport back in the 1980s. Fun to have.
