    downsizing…
    (2 items)

The chair has spiraled spindles on the back and on its 4 main legs. On the bottom the carpenter marks (holes and lines for locating the placement of the legs etc.) are visible. I have see a similar chair pictured in a portrait of a CW soldier but otherwise I know nothing about this chair.

Does anyone have information about the chair's style, age, or use ?

Did someone paint this chair black?

No, this is the original stain- a very dark brown. You can get a good view of its color by zooming in on the first picture and looking at the legs.

      It's a Windsor style chair.

Scroll down a ways, and they are photos of different Windsor chairs. Might help. Of course being no chair expert, I only have little knowledge gleaned from the years. I'm intrigued by leg spindles, and back spindles.

One thing I did notice is that the screw tops are shiny - a no-n0 for an antique or extremely old chair.

Lots of info on the www of course - let's all cheer for "Know it All" Google.

Thanks Gillian for your input but the screw tops are not at all shiny but are covered with the same finish that is on the chair. Thanks for the http://www.designsponge.com/2010/09/past-present-windsor-chair-history-resources.html
address, I will take a look but I never saw a Windsor with spiraled spindles. Keep talking to me if you have farther info. thanks.
