would like to know what it was used for. My grandfather was a farmer this thing is about 3 foot long 2 foot wide the wooden box is attached and when you work the lever it turns the larger gear and when clicked enough it makes a circle turning a gear standing in the middle when it makes a circle it works the third gear. One click per circle the gear is numbered and puzzling me what it was used for.

At 1st glance, I thought for washing clothes & then maybe for making soap. Are you talking about moving the lever that is inside the tub ? Seems to me that something else outside the tub would be moved or wound to make the lever work.

I found another piece of the puzzle. also had a 87 year old man told me what it was. [ a counter for a thrash machine; counts 1/2 bushel at a time] the thrash machines had 10/40 titles so they know who had them and you had to report how many bushels you thrash each year. the older guy said it took 2 man two run the counter and it would wear you out. he said it had two 1/2 bushels buckets. the auger would fill a bucket and you had to drag it by the counter and replace it with a empty one at the same time as not to spill much grain and dump the full bucket in a sack held by your helper and when the sacks where full he tied and stacked them. he said a the end of a day your tired and dirty from the dust.

That was my next suggestion. LOL !! Doesn't sound like you brought back pleasant memories for the old guy .
