I found some kids shooting at this in the woods in central Florida about 23 years ago. I've taken it to collectors and museums of different sorts and no one can tell me what it is. I don't think it is military or fire because the metal seems pretty thin.

looks like it could be from some type of fraternal organization , the design does look like an old fire fighter helmet from around 1900 - 1915 , maybe it's part of a costume for theatrical use, plays?

This is a German fire helmet from around the turn of the 20th Century. I can't determine who made it but up until the end of WWII this style of helmet was still in use all around Central Europe.
A nice helmet, shame it came into such abuse.
