Early barbed wire manufacturers soon learned that vicious barbs damaged livestock and so wire with rotating barbs were introduced. They remained popular up until the 1930s. The design patented by Chester Hodge seems to have been the most successful as more of it has been found than any other. The vertical wires in this display are link wires that could be folded and put in a box for shipment rather than rolled up. The bottom two are chain links with rowel barbs.
The chain link wires in the middle could be folded and placed in a box instead of winding on a spool.
