Hi. I found these Asian oddly shaped bowls at a local thrift store. I found others posted on the web but I want to validate the age. I also tried to translated the mark but had no luck.
What at the orange markings on the side? Thanks for any information you can provide.

well it is signed tong zhi nian zhi which is an abbreviation from da ming tongzhi nian zhi= Tongzhi period made ( 1862-1874)
so the DA qing is out because it is a 4 character mark in stead of a 6 character mark
there are 4 character mark but they ought to be or ferro red hand signed or closed frame stamped , with bourgondie discoloration
we can also rule it out bij the lack of vividness of the tonality of the scene ( and the almond eyes are black in stead of orange
the lustered rim although possible during the tongzhi period but is not likely Tongzhi, most of the tongzhi are coffee coloured rimmed, they made it a luster, called giang jianjiang cai - nising
actually they used the shaping of the classic form of a sweet meat , you got the 3 outer pieces and 1 center piece ( the square)
IMO this piece can,t be made before very late guangxu period , or even early republic period , at least it is not tongzhi for certain

the oranges markings are bats ----The bat is a symbol of happiness and joy. The Chinese for bat (fu ?) sounds identical to the word for good fortune(fu ?) making bats a popular Chinese rebus. Five bats together represent the ‘Five Blessings’ (wufu ??): long life, wealth, health, love of virtue and a peaceful death.

Thank you for the link. It appears that the artwork is on the inside of these bowls. My have the art on the outside. How would that be viewed?
