Hello I’ve just rediscovered this lovely stone, not sure sure of the right name, think goldtone but that don’t seem right., quite big so might be from a pendant, too big to have been a ring,

This is called goldstone, or aventurine, but is not actually a true gemstone. It is a type of glass containing copper. A special slow cooling technique creates the glittering effect - making the copper crystalize (normal cooling creates a plain red/orange glass). It was made in Venice & Bohemia originally, probably in other places as well now. This looks like an earlier example due to the fine & brilliant glitter & was most likely a pendant (I have one similar with a gold setting & chain). It was used a lot in jewelry, beads, & art glass. There is also a green version made with chrome, most typically seen used in Bohemian art glass items from the late 19th century by makers such as Welz, Harrach, & Rindskopf to name a few.
Later products tend not to exhibit such a fine glitter, & can have a more dull, brownish tone.
Thanks so much iron what great help and information, I’m so glad that you have one similar and confirm that it is old & set in gold as this came from a old friend who would strip & melt gold but had no interest in stones, i will try to find some examples online now that I have the proper name of this, and so helpful for you to explain the difference between old & new.
