This Cabinet card shows the Memorial that was erected by the State of Ohio to the famous Andrews' Raiders.
The Memorial was erected in 1890 at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
This photograph was published soon after the dedication of the memorial.
The 24 raiders were tasked with destroying the railroad line that linked Atlanta to Chattanooga; thereby cutting the main supply link to the city of Chattanooga. The raid popularly called the Great Locomotive Chase has been the subject of many books and two movies.
Most of the raiders were captured and 8 were hung as spies. Some of the first Congressional Medals of Honor were awarded to the raiders and eventually 19 participants would receive the honor.
