BENDIX RADIO
Model 687A
Superheterodyne
Product of Bendix Aviation Corporation
Bendix Radio Division - Baltimore, MD
This is a portable suitcase AC/DC tube radio. My best guess is it's dated between 1947 - 1949. I just picked it up at a yard sale in Rockville, MD on 9/25/2010. It still works, and is in immaculate condition for a 60+ year old radio.
SOLD on 11/24/10 for $40.00.

Thats Awesome ! OMG $40.00 ????? Whoever got that got a GREAT deal !
You think??? The guy I sold it to brought a catalog with him that showed it valued around that price. I wanted around $75 for it, but he wouldn't budge and when he showed me it's value I just went ahead and sold it. What do YOU think it's true value was?
Well look at this site :

Some hefty prices there !!
Those seem to be ones that are all bakelite as oppose to just bakelite knobs... plus probably more sought after. I picked it for $20 from a collector who was having a garage sale. I still made $20.
I just love old radio's , being a radio station owner. I would love to find an old working wurlitzer :-)
Watch it when they pull out a price guide. Price guides are just "guides" and only as good as the writer and his information, and the time of publication. In a Fountain Pen Price Guide, was ad by the writers saying he would make an offer for pens, just contact him (he lied about that too). I called him about a pen that he had in his book for $3000.00 and tried to make me feel good about him paying $200.00 for it in its condition. Another collector told me the "issue" he made a big deal over is fixed with a few seconds and a little cleaner. Another pen I called and asked about was listed at $6,000.00. He began to tell me why the pen wasn't worth what he said it was, (nor any pen in his book for that matter) and said he was trying to sell one of the "6,000.00 pens for 2200.00 and couldn't sell it.
On the other hand, in areas that I collect, I find some "price guides" that I dream of finding pieces that they have for the price they list it.
Last weekend my neighbor had a guy pull the "price guide' trick on him and got a 308 rifle with scope, and a shotgun for $200.00. ... do you think he got a fair shake?
$40.00 was a steal for the Suitcase Radio. ... In my opinion. $20.00 was nice to make as well.
Thanks for the advice Jason... I'll certainly keep that in mind for future sales.
You are welcome, and you can call me Kevin. Fore armed with knowledge is the best way to sell.
It is too common here for people to come to Garage Sales and ask "do you have any ... " and when you say yes and describe in detail what you have they walk away because they know they are not going to get a steal. I hate to think the people they cheat but you know the numbers are in their favor.
One man comes with the story that he has "just built a log cabin" and he is looking for guns "just wall hangers" (old and price cheap). He has had the same story for over a year now. My wife called me out and told me there was a guy asking for guns, and I went out to talk to him. When I told him I had a "nipple fire revolver" and that was the end of the conversation. When he saw I knew what I had, he didn't even ask the price, or if I had any other guns, he just packed it in. Thinking of how many old ladies he has cheated, or people that had guns passed through the families, makes me sick.
This radio reminds me of ones the OSS (predecessor to the CIA) had during WWII. They had shortwave radio transmitters in suitcases so agents could broadcast and move quickly before the German locating trucks could not pinpoint them. They were not so obvious as this one as to being something other than a suit case. It could well have been the idea behind this radio.
